Just wanted to send out a quick update regarding the dog respiratory illness. It is now present in Connecticut, and unfortunately here in Newtown. Spoke to multiple veterinarians in the area of Fairfield county, who have all advised the same:
-Stay away from any spots where other dogs are strangers to your dogs. This includes dog parks, indoor venues, groomers and the like. No visiting with Santa for pictures, or going to other hotbeds like Newtown tractor supply where there are unknown dogs.
-Continuing daycare on my property has been deemed safe, since all the dogs are outside in fresh air and have not visited other recreational areas with unknown dogs.
-I already require kennel cough (Bordetella) vaccine for daycare, but you must now make an appointment as soon as possible with your veterinarian for the influenza vaccine (shot/booster series) to continue attending daycare. This is for the safety of your pet, and all dogs in my daycare.
I have been advised by these CT veterinarians that those dogs in their care that currently have the respiratory illness, are healing and it is expected that they will make a full recovery. However it is taking a long time to recover. As always, young puppies, elderly pups and dogs with weakened immune systems are most at risk. Please advise me (and your veterinarian) immediately if your dog is exhibiting any symptoms such as cough, watery eyes, lethargy.
The CT veterinarians are not concerned that this is a deadly virus, but rather a highly spreadable and contagious illness that most dogs are recovering from thus far.
Make your influenza appts today and email me copies per usual.
